Data Collection and Analysis
Darwin Bus System-wide Survey
Client: Department of Transport, Northern Territory
Date: September–November 2012
Phillip Boyle & Associates undertook a complete system-wide survey of the Darwin bus network covering all route services and operators for the Department of Transport. The survey covered all 35 routes and point counts were conducted at the major interchanges of Casuarina, Palmerston and Darwin. Phillip Boyle & Associates’ team was supported by Top End Consulting, who provided additional survey staff.
Survey Type: On-board count
Survey Approach: iPad data-collection system developed by Phillip Boyle & Associates
Outputs provided to the Department of Transport included:
- Complete MS Access database to support network planning
- Run-time graphical outputs and patronage outputs
- Detailed database providing boardings by trip and location, in a queryable format.
The deployment and management of staff in a remote location was a logistical challenge. The team had to liaise closely with the two operators – Darwin Bus Services and Buslink.
